The Cookies and Cream Story
My First Day
During this chapter, students are introduced to our main characters, Cookies and Cream, with whom students will interact throughout the book. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) scientific practices and crosscutting concepts are integrated throughout our game, so we begin with an immersive tutorial that teaches students how to gather and interpret data, and identify causal mechanisms. This quick introduction leaves students wondering what is wrong with our protagonist, Cookies, who is sleeping more and playing less than his sister Cream.
During this chapter, students investigate the musculoskeletal systems to determine if they can identify why Cookies is fatigued. During this inquiry, students identify that there is plenty of glucose (fuel) in the blood, but Cookies’ muscles are lacking fuel. Thus, students have identified a scientific reason for Cookies’ fatigue, and are able to suggest that Cookies needs to exercise more and eat less fuel to help solve this complex problem.
During the GI chapter, students examine “kitty grams” that help us track the behavior patterns of Cookies and Cream. Students interpret and analyze multiple data sets to determine that Cookies often eats junk food and does not exercise often. Within the virtual environment, students are shown the causal mechanism of excess fuel leading to fat storage. Students then construct a new diet for Cookies that is appropriate for him.
Students take a break for lunch, during which time they meet a new character, Ellis, who is making unhealthy food choices. Students examine the food groups, utilize a virtual plate-rather to build healthy plates, and examine the impact of exercise on fuel consumption. Since our bodies are one big system, we want students to understand the effects of food and exercise by envisioning an overall balance that is required regarding the amount of fuel consumed and the amount of fuel used in cats, dogs, and humans.
Students revisit Cookies and Cream to discover Cookies is having trouble running! During the chapter, students dive into Cookies’ bloodstream to explore relationships among body systems, as well as the overall function of various organs so that students can determine how to help Cookies. Eventually, students identify a problem in Cookies' cardiovascular system and must provide a treatment plan.
